Happy Tuesday in the Creative Squad! Now we are excited to talk with you a superb little upcycled travel bag in Maura Hibbitts. She is using my Versailles foam stamp set and also my Urban Scribble stamp set (no longer accessible but when you’re looking for construction stamps here is a good place to begin) and this month’s theme: Vacation Mode — Here in the Northern Hemisphere, we are slogging through winter with no more than one thing on our heads — holiday! Whether it’s Spring Break, a weekend getaway, or a hour with a fantastic book, everyone needs a escape to Vacation Mode now and again.
When I go on holiday, I like to take as well as an art job or travel journal to catch my experiences. I up cycled a small canvas sack that came packed with a few yummy tamales for my undertaking. You may use a purchased canvas bag, or sew one if wanted. (Mine is about 8 x 10 inches/20.5 x 25.5 cm) I like how the printing peeks within my stamped design. Now I’ve got a fun bag I can meet art provides, or use to meet paintings that are found on my holiday.
Start by adding a bit of cardboard to the canvas sack. This will keep the paint from leaching through the opposing side.
I found that the ideal method for me to find decent paint coverage to the Versailles ArtFoamies stamps was to use my gel plate and a brayer to stick to the Quinacridone Gold paint onto the foam. You can also use a palette instead of the gel plate. Do both sides of the bag, and be sure this paint coating is totally dry.
Through trial and error, I discovered I managed to match the stamped pictures better when I started with the adverse impression, and stamped the positive with the Cobalt Turquoise Hue acrylic paint. Let dry. Because you may see, there are a whole lot of imperfections in fitting the pictures, but I’m okay with that.
I used a gold pen, and also a Posca metallic orange pen to bring a few doodles to the bag on both sides. I don’t plan to wash this bag, so didn’t worry about using waterproof pens, but take that under account when you plan to clean your bag.
Now, it is time to bring a bit of embroidery. I used turquoise thread and stitched the base of the bag with a Blanket Stitch. Next, on the front panel, I added French Knots in the circles I’d drawn together with the pens, employing a yellow orange thread.
I wished to earn a charm to add to the bag, so that I made the Urban Scribble picture onto Shrink Plastic with black ink, and cut a section of it to use. Punch a hole into the vinyl, then heat it and shrink it together with your heat gun.
My final touches around the bag were to bring the shrink and metal charms with embroidery thread, and tie loops of vivid orange and yellow orange threads to each part of my quilt sew in the base. Once I’d tied the loops on, I trimmed them to the same length. Now I just have to plan my next trip and determine what to fulfill my yearlong journey bag with!
Thank you Maura! I could see using this bag for an enjoyable evening out also! I only love the bold colours and the reflective particulars — so cool!! Along with a upcycled canvas bag (there are several Probable choices in the list below) and a few cardboard, Maura utilized the following provides for the job :
Feel inspired? Working on something that you want to talk about? I really like to see how you translate our monthly themes. Email me how I used my own stencils and stamps with the theme and email me a picture — I’d really like to share with your projects in my next “n*Spiration From Around the Globe”.
